Description:

Excellent combination logbook and scrapbook compiled by sailor Hermann Beckmann during his service aboard the German cruiser EMDEN as the vessel conducted a wide-ranging training cruise from Oct. 13, 1936 to April 22, 1937. The journal, 168pp. 4to. in a blue leather-bound "Logbuch", is written in German and widely illustrated throughout. Although we have not translated Beckmann's entries, each is at least one-third of a page and is clearly and legibly penned. Beckmann also widely embellished his entries with hand-drawn and colored maps of the various ports he visited, silhouettes of various warships of other nations he viewed, flags, period postcard photographs, published illustrations, menus, etc. Of special interest are the pages dedicated to the vessel's visits to the ports of Nanking and Shanghai which occupy 23 pages. They include a schedule for the visit with a special presentation by Hitler Youth, promotional postcard ads by merchant "Yu Tai Woo Kee & Co., and a dance token for St. George's in Shanghai. Other ports visited include Cagliari, Constantinople, Galle, Singapore, Bangkok, Borneo, Tokyo, Padang, Bombay, Alexandria, and Mallorca. A wealth of information worthy of translation. Near fine. EMDEN finally returned to Wilhelmshaven on April 23.
