Lot 1152
1152. HENRY CABOT LODGE, JR. (1902-1986) American politician, prominent Senator and Ambassador to the U.N. Fine content T.L.S. on Senate letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Dec. 14, 1951 to a clergyman who did not agree with America's decision to establish diplomatic relations with the State of Vatican City. In part: "...The establishment of such diplomatic relations does not...in any way controvert the principle of separation of church and state, which, of course, I cherish as do all Americans. This principle is legally secured in the First Amendment...The United States has sent diplomatic representatives to the State of Vatican City in a purely political capacity...[it] has its own governments, emits its own currency and maintains its own postal system...It is perhaps worthy to mention that the British Sovereign is a personage having both religious and civil attributes...the Pope [has the same attributes]...the establishment of these diplomatic relations will strengthen...the struggle against communism...[and help] to contain the world menace of communism..." Much more fine content! Very good. $100-150
