Description:

LLOYD TILGHMAN SELF-PORTRAIT AS A PRISONER
(1816 - 1863) Confederate brigadier general who surrendered Fort Henry, later commanded at Corinth and Vicksburg, killed in action at Champion's Hill. Superb original war-date ink drawing, a self-portrait undertaken by Tilghman while a prisoner at Fort Warren in Boston, 8" x 10" (sight), matted to 14" x 16". Tilghman draws a full-length image of himself seated and looking to his right, wearing a beret-type hat, blouse and scarf, notated at bottom: "Fort Warren July 12 '62". Very good, set into a black mat bearing a period white-ink notation: "Sketched by Genl Lloyd Tilghman whilst a prisoner of war at Ft. Warren, Boston Mass. and given to his son Sidell". A superb relic from an important Confederate general who would soon be killed in action.
