LIVINGSTON FAMILY OF NEW YORK ARCHIVE (17)
A substantial grouping, seventeen letters and documents signed by early members of the influential Livingston family of New York State. The Livingston family is a prominent family that migrated from Scotland to the Dutch Republic, and then to the Province of New York in the 17th century. Descended from the 4th Lord Livingston, its members included signers of the Declaration of Independence (Philip Livingston) and the Constitution (William Livingston). Several members were Lords of Livingston Manor and Clermont Manor, located along the Hudson River in 18th-century eastern New York. Descendants of the Livingstons include Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Congressman Bob Livingston of Louisiana, much of the wealthy Astor family, New York Governor Hamilton Fish, actor Montgomery Clift, and actress Jane Wyatt. The grouping includes: PHILIP LIVINGSTON (1686–1749), merchant, slave trader and politician in colonial New York. The son of Robert Livingston the Elder and elder brother of Robert of Clermont, Philip was the second lord of Livingston Manor. D.S., 1p. oblong legal folio, [n.p.], 1724-25, an accounting for goods and services provided to one Abraham Truex; JOHN LIVINGSTON (1714-1786), a wealthy merchant, A.D.S., 2pp. sm. folio, 1780, an accounting of the estate of his father-in-law, Abraham de Peyster, signed three times; WILLIAM LIVINGSTON, from the New Hampshire branch of the family, D.S., 2pp. legal folio, Londonderry, NH, July 18, 1763, witnessing a deed; JOHN ROBERT LIVINGSTON (1755-1851), a land speculator, 2pp. legal folio, 'Tarry Town', July 13, 1835, complains of having furnished materials for a house which suspiciously burned; WITH an A.L.S., 1p. legal folio, Red Hook, July 15, 1799, financial matters; WITH: an A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Claremont, 1799, to his brother Robert, an accounting for personal debts; WILLIAM S. LIVINGSTON, A.L.S., 1p. legal folio, 'Sup. Court', Aug. 15, 1792, sending notice of trial ass plaintiff's attorney; MARGARET LIVINGSTON TILLOTSON (1749-1823), daughter of Robert Livingston and Margaret Beekman, a letter to her brother John R. Livingston bemoaning the death of her sister; GILBERT LIVINGSTON (1742–1806), a lawyer who, in 1788, served as a delegate to the Poughkeepsie Convention where, despite having arrived at the convention as an Anti-Federalist, he ultimately voted to ratify the United States Constitution. A.D.S. signed twice, 1p. legal folio, Aug. 8, 1804, an estate document; WITH an A.L.S., 1p. legal folio, Poughkeepsie, June 4, 1779, mentions clothing and personal items being brought to him by ship by 'Capt. Richee'; PETER R. LIVINGSTON (1766– 1847), American politician who served as Acting Lieutenant Governor of New York, A.D.S. 1p. legal folio, 'Manor Livingston', Dec. 21, 1774, concerns an overdue payment from an estate, toned, WITH an A.L.S., 1p. legal folio, New York, Aug. 8, 1767, a long and deeply religious letter also referencing an unpopular minister; WITH an A.L.S. 1p. legal folio, Sep. 2, 1767, financial matters; PETER W. LIVINGSTON (1767-1826), son of Peter R. Livingston. A.L.S., 1p. legal folio, 1792 to L. Gansevoort in Albany interceding for his brother who owes the man one hundred pounds; CATHERINE LIVINGSTON D.S., 2pp. legal folio, Poughkeepsie, Mar. 24, 1810, an employment contract with one Simon A. Fraer; JOHN R. LIVINGSTON (1755-1851), A.L.S., 2pp. legal folio, Boston, Jan. 17, 1781, an accounting between himself and his brother, John R. Livingston; and HENRY W. LIVINGSTON (1768–1810), United States Representative from the state of New York, A.L.S., 2pp. legal folio, [n.p.], 1799: '...we will join you in the sale of the land in Jersey and approve of any terms you may consent to...' All but two of the documents are sold with typed transcripts, all originate from the Lincoln Library in Shippensburg, Pa. Overall very good condition. 17 pieces.

Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
