LIONEL GILES
(1875-1958) British scholar and translator, best known for his English editions on Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" and The Analects of Confucius. Disbound signed and inscribed pamphlet, "A T'ang Manuscript of the Sou Shen Chi", (Shanghai: New China Review), 1921, 18pp. in two parts, 4to., with the ink inscription: "With kind regards L.G." at the top of the cover of the first part. The pamphlet describes Giles' discovery and analysis of a T'ang Dynasty-era fragment of the Soushenji, a compilation of legends and short stories written by a historian named Gan Bao in the fourth century. The pamphlet is illustrated with one photograph of the manuscript, and bear several emendations to the text in red ink, possibly in Giles' hand. Very good.
