A group of four pieces by notable individuals involved in the Lincoln assassination trial. The first, REVERDY JOHNSON (1796-1876), an American politician and lawyer who represented the defense in the Dredd Scott case and was instrumental in keeping Maryland in the Union. Johnson unsuccessfully defended Mary Surratt, who was convicted of her role in the assassination conspiracy and executed in July 1865. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Baltimore, April 25, 1853, sending apologies to not be able to provide an autograph of Zachary Taylor. A small area of loss at bottom right, just clear of signature, otherwise light wear and very good. WITH: JOHN A. BINGHAM (1815-1900) Member of Congress and Judge Advocate in the trial of conspirators in Abraham Lincoln's assassination, prosecutor in Andrew Johnson's impeachment trial, and framer of the 14th Amendment. A.D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p.], Oct. 12, 1853 [?], a subpoena for two men, central fold, very good. WITH: JAMES A. EKIN (1819-1891) Union brevet brigadier general who served in the Quartermaster's Department through the war and a member of the military commission trying Lincoln assassination conspirators. Very bold, elegant signature and sentiment accomplished on a small sheet, adding rank. Irregularly trimmed, else very good. Offered with a portrait engraving. WITH: DAVID R. CLENDENIN (1830-1895) Union lieutenant colonel, a member of the military commission trying the Lincoln assassination conspirators. Signature on a small, lined slip taken from a document. Fine. Four pieces.
