Description:

(LINCOLN ASSASSINATION) THOMAS H. HARBIN
(1833-1885) Confederate mail agent who reported directly to Jefferson Davis, using the alias ‘Thomas Wilson'. Harbin was called upon to aid the escape of John Wilkes Booth and David Herold after Lincoln's assassination. When the fugitive pair made it across the river on April 22, 1865, Harbin met them and turned them over to a guide who took them to the home of Dr. Richard H. Stewart. It is also suggested that Harbin had been a part of the original plan to kidnap Lincoln and smuggle him south for an exchange for Confederate prisoners. Later Harbin became a clerk at the National Hotel. Very rare A.D.S. 1p. 12mo., [n.p.], Nov. 3, [18]74]. As hotel clerk, Hardin arranges for a boating party to visit Mt. Vernon, adding: ‘please see that they see…all points of interest…'. Very good.
