Description:

LINCOLN ASSASSINATION IN THE NEW YORK TRIBUNE
A rare pairing of newspapers reporting on the shooting and death of Abraham Lincoln. The morning and evening editions of the April 15, 1865 printing of the New York Daily Tribune 4pp. ea., folio with black-bordered columns. The morning edition reports on page three the earliest dispatches received from Washington: "HIGHLY IMPORTANT! The President Shot! Secretary Seward Attacked", then sets forth the text of eleven dispatches received before press time. The very first dispatch reads: "The President was shot in a theater to-night, and perhaps mortally wounded". Later dispatches included incorrect reports of Lincoln's death hours before it actually occurred, Seward's death etc., with the facts becoming clearer as time passed. The evening edition of the paper reprints the earlier dispatches on page two, and continues the story on page three: "DEATH OF THE PRESIDENT". It cites Stanton's official notice of Lincoln's death, describes the late president's declining medical condition and the scene at the time of his death, incorrectly reports the capture of John Wilkes Booth, describes the early mourning in the capitol and the inauguration of Andrew Johnson, and more. The first newspaper is disbound and in excellent condition; the never bound evening edition bears some foxing, with moderate soiling to page three. The New York Tribune report on Lincoln's death was one of the first nationwide, and the evening edition is excessively rare as it was seldom bound in volumes for preservation. Housed in a custom-made black folder with gilt lettering.
