Description:

LINCOLN ASSASSINATION AND HOME FRONT COLLECTION
A good collection of nine home front letters, largely written by Miss Etta White to Union soldier J. S. Harman, various locations, 1862-65, three letters mentioning Lincoln's death. In small part: "...I was happy to know that you was recovering...the diptheria is raging all about us...they raised a company for home guard or rather state defense...our boys from here are all gone to the army...very sorry to hear that he is a prisoner for the poor fellows who are in the Libby prison have to suffer so much...wish that I was a man so that I could go and fight the rebels too...I was at a funeral of a soldier who was brought home last Monday...R. T. Thompson and Willie Thompson, George Welch, John Rolland and D. Delaney are all dead...you said you was not exchanged yet...if feel like if you is better in parole camp than with your regiment...more of our acquaintences still being exchanged...I am very sorry about our President's death...The rebels all say they have lost their best friend...I don't think they will fare so well hereafter. I hope they may not for I want them to get the one that shot him and hang him and I think I could stand and see him hung. I never wanted to see anyone hung but I think I could see that dance...The news came here yesterday that Lincoln and Seward was both dead...the one was shot and the other stabbed...the people was beginning to think that the war was about over...". Overall very good.
