793. ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. A.E.S. penned on the verso of an L.S. to Lincoln from New Jersey Gov. CHARLES S. OLDEN on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Trenton, Oct. 8, 1861 in which Olden recommends Capt. George B. Raymond for a position in command of a vessel in the Navy. Two days later, on Oct. 10, 1861, Lincoln pens his endorsement: "Respectfully submitted to the Secretary of the Navy, asking a fair consideration, and that Mr. Raymond be employed, if consistent with the public service. A. Lincoln". Bears heavy foxing in places from previous exposure to dampness, but could be restored easily, else very good.
