Description:

LIBERATION OF MITTELBAU-DORA
A set of eleven candid 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" b/w & sepia photographs of the notorious labor camp of Mittelbau-Dora soon after its liberation on Apr. 11, 1945. The images, taken by an American G.I., illustrate the horrible conditions in the camp that supplied labor to the underground Mittelwerk V-2 rocket factory. The images, most too graphic to reproduce here, consist of close-up images of some 5,000 corpses that greeted the members 104th Infantry Division. In February 1945 the camp received approximately 16,000 inmates from Auschwitz and Gross-Rosen, and soon afterwards, came under the administration of the former command staff of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Prior to the Americans' arrival, most of the surviving inmates had been placed on forced death marches to Ravensbrück and Bergen-Belsen. The Americans only encountered a few hundred survivors at the camp. Photographs are in overall very good to fine condition. Together, eleven pieces.
