Description:

LEWIS PARSONS
(1818-1907) Union brigadier general who was one of the last officers promoted to the rank during the war. Parsons was in charge of rail and river transportation for several different armies through the years of the war and laid the foundations for expanding railroad activities into the west. War-date A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., St. Louis, July 2, 1863, to Col. Pingham regarding transport boats and his responsibilities. In part: '...I fear my object in sending Capt. Witcalf with the boats moving the 9th Army corps was misapprehended though my instructions I thought clearly showed my design. What I desired was first simply to see that the boats of the expedition did their duty and were returned as soon as possible for services here and to save expenses...being here in general charge of transportation...I did not seek or wish this position here and have often tried to get out of it, but while here I will like yourself seek to do my duty not only to the gov't but to my fellow officers.' Parsons signs the conclusion and also writes his initials after a postscript. Fine condition.
