Description:

LEWIS MORRIS
(1726 - 1798) American Revolutionary politician and Signer of the Declaration of Independence who sat with Washington in committee to determine the ways and means to supply the colonies with ammunition and military stores and saw his estate destroyed in retaliation for his patriotic sentiments. Fine association A.L.S. "Lewis Morris" with integral address leaf addressed to his son "Colonel Lewis Morris" (thus signed twice), 2pp. 4to., Morrisania, Aug. 13, 1791. Morris opens his letter expressing the great happiness he and his wife felt upon receiving their son's letter, asks about their daughter-in-law, and mentions the recent harvest. He adds: "...I have sent you by this Vessel a Barrel of superfine flour...but Staats [Morris] wishes this may not be mentioned...the poor fellow is now engaged in the army and what with recruiting and drafting...takes up his whole time. I think the army will be the best place for him...Mr. [Alexander?] Hamilton was at N. York the other day, he went on board of the cutter and spoke very handsomely of the sailor, it put him in fine spirits...James in my opinion will make a commotion with Miss Wadsworth...Next summer when you come I must insist you make Morrisania your home...". More family content. Two marginal chips costing perhaps eight words of text have been professionally filled-in, slight show-through of ink, else very good.
