(1832 – 1919) Union Colonel of the 173rd New York Infantry and Brevet Major General, originally served as captain of Company K of the 67th New York Vols. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., Winchester, Virginia, March 16, 1865, to Col. C. C. Dwight regarding prisoners from his regiment. In part: ‘...furnish me with any information you have respecting the prisoners belonging to my regt. now in the hands of the Rebels...I suppose you do all in your power and I hope you will ultimately succeed in releasing them. I am as you see quite restored to all my rights...We are lying quietly in environs of the town. General Hancock's influence pervades...he commands Division in place Sheridan...This Brigade...temporarily under my command. French leaves Ge. Emory's staff in a short time and Cooly has gone with Custer and the Cavalry to Richmond...' Signed at the conclusion as colonel. A post-script appears on the verso and is signed ‘L.M.P.' This letter was penned only a few months after Peck had been court martialed. Included in this lot is ‘General Orders No. 13', Camp Russell, Virginia, Nov. 23, 1864, in which it is revealed Peck was charged with ‘misbehavior before the enemy' by Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Banks and that he has been found not guilty. Two pieces, fine.
