LEVI WOODBURY
(1789 - 1851) Justice of the Supreme Court and cabinet member in the administrations of Jackson, Van Buren, and Polk. Manuscript L.S. as Secretary of Navy, 1p. 4to. 'Navy Department', January 22, 1833, to the President of the Boston branch of the Bank of the U.S. requesting payment statements. In part: '...I request you will be pleased to inform me as early as practicable of the sums which have been paid to Commissioner Samuel Tucker...Tucker has availed himself of the Act of Congress passed on the 7th of June last in relation to Revolutionary claims and is consequently no longer upon the Navy Pension Roll...' Tipped to a larger sheet, light ink stains else very good. The Act of Congress passed on June 7, 1832 extended full pay for life to all officers and enlisted men who served at least two years in the Continental forces during the Revolutionary War. Samuel Tucker (1747-1833) was a highly distinguished Continental Navy officer who fought in the Revolution and the War of 1812. He commanded the 'Boston' which in 1778 delivered future Presidents John Adams and his son John Quincey across the Atlantic to Bordeaux, shortly after France agreed to an alliance with the United States.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
