Description:

(1789 - 1851) Justice of the Supreme Court and cabinet member in the administrations of Jackson, Van Buren, and Polk. Great economic content A.L.S. as Jackson's Secretary of the Treasury, 1p. 4to., Treasury Department, July 21, 1836, a letter to a cashier of the Girard Bank - one of the 'pet banks' selected by the Jackson administration to receive surplus Treasury funds after the rechartering of the Second Bank of the United States. In part: '...Doubts having arisen as to the true construction of the late...law relative to the form of transfers to be made to the Mint for the purpose of coining, it has become proper to take the opinion of the Attorney General...accommodate the Director of the Mint by depositing...$200,000 of silver [boldly underlined] bullion, provided you have it...to keep their operations going on successfully...' One strong vertical fold with light loss at the top, else fine. With Jackson, Woodbury successfully worked to end the Second Bank of the U.S., preferring an 'independent' treasury system and favoring 'hard money' over paper money, as suggested above. In retrospect, Woodbury's efforts would plunge the nation into the Panic of 1837. Ironically, Girard Bank established in the very same building as the First Bank of the United States after its charter expired in 1811, and the bank became one of the directors of the Second Bank of the United States after the War of 1812.
