Description:

(1824 - 1920) 22nd Vice President of the United States under Benjamin Harrison. Great association A.L.S. on House of Representatives letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 3, 1881, to Gen. DANIEL G. BUTTERFIELD (1831-1901), certainly regarding the court-martial of General Fitz John Porter - accused by Maj. Gen. John Pope of 'disobedience and disloyalty' during the Second Battle of Bull Run and relieved from command. The letter reads in part: 'Dear General, I have yours of the 31st, and have carefully noted your appeal in behalf of our friend General Porter. As of present advised, I see no reason why I cannot meet your wishes in the matter, in case the new Bill comes before the House...' Slight chip at lower corner, else fine. Butterfield served under Maj. Gen. Porter's V Corps before the Battle of Bull Run, and was selected to command the V Corps himself after Porter's discharge. Porter's sentence would only be commuted in 1886.
