Description:

LEVI LINCOLN
(1782 - 1868) American politician, Jefferson's Attorney general and Governor of Massachusetts, elected a member of the Continental Congress but declined to serve. A lot of two items, the first an A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Gloucester, May 22, 1835, to a committee of statesmen including H. Frothingham, Moses Little, Isaac Boyd and Josiah Little. In part: "...I might make arrangements by which I would promise myself the pleasure of participating in the Festival of the 'second Centennial Anniversary of the organization of the Ancient [?] of Newbury'...It is not without...regret, that I find myself denied by the urgency of business...". Very good. Along with a partly-printed D.S. as Governor of Massachusetts, 1p. folio, Boston, Jan. 4, 1831, a pass given to one Charles Larkin to "...pass safely and freely" while en route to Smyrna "and elsewhere". Folds reinforced with tape on verso, overall good condition. Two pieces.
