LETTER GROUPING OF PVT. JOHN A. ROSE, 5TH N.C. INFANTRY
Group of five war-date letters written home by Pvt. John A. Rose, Co. K, 5th NC Infantry, mustered in July 8, 1862, died of disease on Mar. 5, 1863, 12pp. various sizes and dates, all in pencil. In small part: "...[Statesville, Aug. 14m 1862] we was mustered in to camp about 9 oclock...plenty of flour and bacon and salt...we have formed our mess...nine hundred men in camp...we haven''t drilled but very little yet...the adjutant detailed 142 men to guard...we go to the fifth regiment...[Oct. 18, 1862 Winchester] there have been some battle since we are out here...under marching orders...the yankeys are gone back...we have not drwaed any [clothing] yet...we have drawd shoes...[Camp near Fredericksburg Dec. 28, 1862] we need each a pair of pants our pants is wore out and I don''t know when we will draw again...our shoes is tollerible...and a couple loaves of bake oven bread...my hat is wore out...a little sewing thread and soap...we have got us a shelter better than a tent...covered it with leaves and dirt...[Martinsburg, Sep. 2, 1862] I will tell you a little of our march...we left Rapadan River...I took the mumps but they didn''t hurt me I waded the Potomac the night of the 18th on our retreat...the next day the cannons roared and the bombs whistled...they had a fight there at Shepard''s foard...[Lynchburg, Feb. 6, 1863] I think I am getting better...very bad weather ince I came here...I would rather have my health and be with the Regiment...". With three transmittal envelopes. Typical smudges, folds and toning, still very good.
