Stith, captured on July 3, 1863 during Pickett's Charge, was held at Fort Delaware from July 5, 1863 until he was exchanged on Sep. 18, 1864. In part: "...Necessity has compelled me to write to you again to ask you to be kind enough to send me some more money. I hear from Capt. Jones and Lieut. Fitzgerald a few days ago they were well. W. T. Fitzgerald and the other Ottaway Boys are all well. By complying with the above request you will much oblige your friend...". With transmittal envelope cancelled at Point Lookout. One ink eroded hole, else very good. Co. G was at the forefront of the charge: of the entire company, only six came out unhurt.
