Description:

LEOPOLD I
(1640-1705) King of Hungary and Bulgaria, a Holy Roman Emperor remembered for his military successes against the Ottoman Empire and participation in the War of Spanish Succession to remove the Bourbon King Philip V of Spain. Rare printed D.S. "Leopoldy" 1p. folio, Vienna, Apr. 5, 1659, in German regarding the alleged abuses of Jewish butchers in the slaughtering and selling of beef, in part: "...We learn with considerable displeasure that itinerant rural Jews to whom our most honored and deeply beloved father Ferdinand III, after observing the usages of Viennese Jews, had granted the right to their own slaughter houses and [kosher]butchers...have abused the privilege by handling other than Jewish meat and are now illegally doing general meat butchery...". Leopold implies herein that the Jews are taking work away from Christian butchers, and also cites that Jews have overcharged and peddled meat from one inn to another and done business even on Christian religious holidays and on market days. Henceforth, Jewish butchers are to slaughter only for specifically Jewish consumption. Nine years after this document, Jews were accused of setting fire to Vienna's Hofburg Palace. Leopold was rescued and, a year later, ordered the expulsion of Jews from Vienna. Ironically, however, he retained Samuel Oppenheimer and Samson Wertheimer as financiers and Court Jews. Usual folds reinforced with tape on verso, very good condition. Quite attractive, with original blind-embossed paper seal at bottom.
