Description:

LEONARD F. ROSS
(1823-1901) Union brigadier general who participated in the siege of Corinth and commanded infantry forces in the Yazoo Expedition. Good association and content A.L.S., ‘L F Ross' on his letterhead as a cattle breeder, 1p. 8vo., Iowa City, July 30, 1885, to fellow brigadier general Andrew Hickenlooper. Ross acknowledges receipt of a circular letter and reports that he has paid his dues to the Society of the Army of the Tennessee, of which Hickenlooper was secretary. He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink, adding a post-script reflecting on the death of Ulysses S. Grant the week before: ‘Our dear old First Commander God bless him! has attended an last meeting on Earth – But he leaves for us the brightest record ever made by mortal man.' Shows original mailing folds, with splits thereto repaired on the verso with cello tape, with additional adhesive residue to the verso and a few small chips to the bottom edge, otherwise in very good condition overall.
