Description:

LEON TROTSKY
(1879 - 1940) Russian Communist leader who with Lenin organized the Bolshevik October Revolution, defeated by Stalin in their struggle for control of the government, banished and later assassinated in Mexico. Typed D.S. "L. Trotsky" in blue indelible pencil, 1p. [Moscow], 1920, in part: "...Copy Urgently, Order of the Revolutionary Military Soviet of the Republic No. 6…By Personal Staff, Revolutionary Military Tribunal of the 4th Army…Chairman: Comrade Altman, Members: G. Gusev [real name of Yakov Drabkin], and Tarnopolchenko, Chairman of the Revolutionary War Council of the Republic ["Revvoyensovyet"] ….". One additional signature, with several manuscript additions in different hands. One diagonal repair near upper left corner not affecting text. Very good. At the time of this order, during the Russian Civil War, the Soviet Revolutionary Tribunals were sentencing to death, without trial, thousands of soldiers and officers of the Czar's army. Trotsky was the first chairman of the Revvoyensovyet which was the supreme military authority of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. All fronts and military organizations were under the single command of the Revvoyensoviet, giving Trotsky an enormous amount of power.
