Contained within a fine full red leather folding slipcase with gilt title, portrait of Trotsky and full translation. BORIS VASILYEVICH LEGRAN (or "Legrand") (1884–1936) was a Bolshevik revolutionary and Soviet official who represented the interests of the Russian SFSR in Armenia and Transcaucasia during the 1920s and worked as a consular official in China during the 1920s. The 1916 Basmachi Revolt resulted from a decree conscripting the natives into labor battalions (they had previously been exempt from military service). Thousands of settlers were killed, and this was matched by Russian reprisals, particularly against the nomadic population. Order had not been restored by the time of the 1917 February Revolution. Bolsheviks of the Tashkent Soviet (made up entirely of Russian soldiers and railway workers, with no Muslim members) launched an attack on the autonomous Jadid government in Kokand early in 1918, which left 14,000 dead. Resistance to the Bolsheviks by the local population (dismissed as 'Basmachi' or 'bandits' by Soviet historians) continued well into the beginning of 1930s. Also following the Russian Revolution, the "Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic" (prior to the creation of the Soviet Union) was created in Soviet central Asia which would last until the break-up of the Soviet Union.
