Description:

LEO X PAPAL BULLE
LEO X, GIOVANNI DE'MEDICI (1475-1521), the last non-priest to be elected Pope, believed by the Protestants to have caused the Reformation. He excommunicated Martin Luther with a bull (which he publicly burned). A rare papal bull in Latin on parchment, 1p. oblong legal folio (11 3/4" x 9"), signed on Leo X's behalf by a Vatican cardinal but with original 1 1/2" diameter lead seal (detached) showing St. Peter and St. Paul on one side, and Leo X Papa inscribed on the verso. The bull grants certain rights to the Cloister of Santa Maria de Consolation in Rome. Usual folds and soiling consistent with age, five cut cancels at blank bottom margin, overall very good condition. A rare document, ex: Reiss & Sohn, with original auction invoice from 2007.
