131. MARY CUSTIS LEE (1806-1873) Wife of Confederate Lt. Gen. Robert E. Lee and the only daughter of George Washington Parke Custis, grandson of Martha Washington. Scarce A.L.S. mentioning her husband signed "M. C. Lee" 1p. 8vo., "Saturday", [n.p., n.d.], to a John Lloyd, Esq. of Virginia. In part: "...As I may not be in town for several days & Robert [E Lee] is anxious to have this money at once will you be so kind as to go to the Bank for me on Monday morning & if you can get a check on some Baltimore Bank for $50.00 payable only to Robert's order...give to our servant you need not tell him what it is but tell him to be very careful...I do not know whether Robert wishes to pay any discount for a check on Baltimore...". On a more personal note, Mary adds: "Tell cousins Harriet & Nannie I congratulate them upon the arrival of the young stranger to whom I hope to pay my respects...". Tear at bottom right corner expertly repaired with no loss of text, very good, with original integral address leaf intact.
