Description:

LEE HARVEY OSWALD
(1939 - 1963) American assassin of President John F. Kennedy who Oswald shot in Dallas, November 22, 1963. Oswald was in turn murdered by nightclub owner Jack Ruby days later. Fine content A.L.S. "Lee", 2pp. 8vo., [Minsk], Aug. 21, 1961 to his brother Robert in Texas. While deep in negotiations with the American Embassy to reclaim his American citizenship, the disgruntled ex-Marine offers a glimpse of his life in the Soviet Union, and perhaps a portent of the future: "...I'm glad to hear you are all right now. ..didn't you get a thank you note from Maria [Marina, whom he married early the same year] for the necklace and also for those pictures of Jr.? Its hard for me to tell whether you get all my letters, they have a lot of censorship here...". Oswald offers a chilling hint of things to come: "...I went hunting last week end, we have alot of pine forest here, I shot a couple of birds with my single barrel 16 guage shotgun, but I couldn't find them. The weather is already turning to winter here, the summer is very short in belorussia. I received a package from mother a few days ago...she is real good to me...". Bottom of first page is wrinkled, else fine condition. In the Marines, Oswald qualified as a sharpshooter, a skill he would put to terrible use two years hence...Ex: Charles Hamilton Auction 36, Sep. 18, 1969.
