129. GEORGE W. C. LEE (1832 - 1913) Confederate major general and Robert E. Lee's son, he defended Richmond and was captured at Sayler's Creek while in retreat toward Appomattox. Fine association A.L.S. "G. W. C. Lee", 3pp. 8vo., Lexington, Nov. 23, 1871 to a couple who had named their son after Lee's father, Robert E. Lee, who himself had died the previous year. In part: "...The photograph of your little boy, my father's namesake, was not delivered to me...In my desire to send you such a memento as you mentioned, I waited until my sister...could examine carefully into what we had left relating to my father...My sister has selected for your little Robbie a lock of my father's hair, and one of his military buttons [neither present], which are enclosed, and which I hope you will accept with the best wishes of our household for yours...[we] will preserve the picture of your little son with a lively interest in his welfare...". With holograph envelope addressed and signed again by Lee (torn and soiled), and with a child's wallet showing that young "Robert E. Lee" later lived in Birmingham, Alabama. Three pieces. 500 - 600
