Description:

37. CHARLES LEE (1758 - 1815) Attorney General under Washington and John Adams, and a close personal friend of Washington as well. Scarce war-date D.S. "Charles Lee", 1p. oblong 8vo., Philadelphia, Apr. 12, 1779, a receipt in which Lee certifies that he has sold to Jeremiah Warder & Co. a letter of exchange drawn by Lee upon Jonathan Garton of London at thirty days sight. He further promises in the case of protest to pay with interest and "charges of protest when demanded and not otherwise". Endorsed by Warder on verso, boldly signed. Trimmed at all four margins costing two letters of text at right, else very good. A particularly interesting document in light of the fact that Lee had lost his command following the debacle at the battle on Monmouth nearly a year earlier. Many have suggested treachery and monetary transactions between an American general and British financiers certainly would have raised eyebrows at the time.$800-1,200
