LAVRENTIY BERIA
(1899-1953) Chief of the NKVD, the Soviet security and secret police apparatus under Joseph Stalin during World War II, his deputy premier from 1941 on, and serial rapist, he was purged and executed after Stalin's death. Fine association and content war-date T.L.S in indelible pencil on NKVD letterhead, 1p. large 4to., Moscow, Mar. 2, 1940 to KLIMENT VOROSHILOV (1881-1969), Soviet military officer and politician who served as Stalin's defense minister, reorganized the general staff, mechanized the army, and developed the air force. Beria sends a report from the Finnish front, in part: '...February 29, at 7:45 a.m., Belofinsky saw the plane dropped bombs on the Perkiyarni station of the military road 3 6 - 3. Bombs fell outside the camp. At 8:30 a.m., the second group of the White Finnish aircraft attacked, which dropped three incendiary bombs. Two bombs hit the station's dormitory car, 5 people were killed, 4 people were seriously injured. The wagon burned down...' Signed by Beria in indelible pencil (as always) at conclusion, also initialed by Voroshilev. File holes, else fine. Three days later, Stalin and his closest political associates ordered the Katyn Wood massacre which would be headed by Beria. WITH: the Dec. 24, 1953 full edition of the San Francisco Examiner, the front page headline dramatically declaring: 'BERIA, 6 AIDES EXECUTED BY RUSSIAN FIRING SQUAD' with the story beneath.
