Description:

LATVIAN AIR DIVISION BADGE IN SILVER
Rare Latvian Air Division Badge, commonly called the Latvian Pilot Badge. This two-part badge bears a stern, downward-looking silver eagle with outstretched wings, somewhat bowed and 3 in. long, nicely details. The reverse bears no mark, but the screw-on fastener bears the maker's name: 'J. EDELHAUS RIGA' and 'MAKSL GRAVES IEST'. The eagle is suspended by two chains beneath the diamond-shaped red enameled mobile swastika inset into silver, also unmarked but with the screw-on fasteners bearing the same maker's marking as does the eagle. The enamel is completely intact, though a minute spot may be very slightly discolored. Some tarnish, overall in excellent condition. The Latvian Aviation Regiment was established in 1919 out of native Latvian pilots who were part of the Russian Imperial Air Force. Once a peace between Latvia and the Soviet Union was signed in 1920, the independent Latvian air forces continued until overrun by the Soviet Union at the start of World War II. Latvian pilots continued to fly with the German Luftwaffe ex-patria, wearing Luftwaffe uniforms with a combination of German and Lativian pilot insignia. This badge was issued in gold for officers, silver for NCOs.
