Description:

LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY HOME REMEDIES
An interesting quartet of manuscript medical documents, each 1p. 8vo. on both sides of sheet, being remedies for with various ailments such as "Bilious Colic" and to make "an ointment peculiar for swelling in the Privates"! With great content, including: "...Directions given to Sarah Keith...troubled with Oedemata or Phlegmatick Tumors...Let her Bread be of pure White with Carraway, Fennil or Annise...Purge her once in a week or two with Buckshorn Syrup...The Tumors may often washed in Urine...". Another, "Recipe 46 for the Fever & Ague", urges the practitioner to: "...Take Crude Antimony clean & pure from the Mine; pound it fine...put it into a Quart of Spring Water...Let the Patient one hour before Ague Fit comes on, take forty Drops of this Water...", and the more sinister: "Draught for the Evil: to be taken when the above plaister is apply'd..." that includes eating nothing but wheat bread for 20 days. Much more fascinating content! Badly damp stained and worn, a bit fragile but nonetheless very legible.
