WILHELM 'WILLI' HUBNER (1929-2010) A Hitler Youth member who joined the war effort late in the war and was one of the youngest people to be awarded the Iron Cross, Second Class, at the age of 16. He is most remembered as being the youth Hitler patted upon the cheek in the last photograph taken of Hitler before his suicide. 'WE NEVER RECEIVED THE IRON CROSS DIRECTLY FROM THE FUHRER...' Great content T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Landshut, July 18, 1984 to a fellow German commenting on his famous encounter with Hitler during his last public appearance. He writes (in German): '...After receiving your letter, I calmly reviewed my old documents and will now try to answer your questions. First, I am enclosing a photocopy of myself...Regarding the awarding of the Iron Cross, I would like to tell you the following again. I first received my Iron Cross in Lauban from the local combat commander. Whether my other comrades in Berlin had received theirs before then, I no longer know. We all received an Iron Cross at the guesthouse of the Reich Youth Leader Axmann in Berlin-Gatow. We never received the Iron Cross directly from the Fuhrer, as the newsreel claimed. However, all postwar reports adopted the newsreel's account Incidentally, in Berlin there was a comrade who shot down a tank. - Well, my entry into the DJ was, of course, at the age of 10. You are correct in your assumption that our district used to have a different number, namely 19...Hoping that my explanation is helpful and that you might send me another postcard in reply...'
