Description:

LANGSTON HUGHES
(1902-1967) Black American writer and poet who gained recognition with his poem ‘The Negro Speaks of Rivers'. Bold signature in blue pencil at the right cover margin of a copy the first edition of Communist booklet ‘Daily Worker'. The pamphlet, 23pp. small 8vo., was published by Workers Library Publishers, New York in February 1934. Hughes became interested in Communist political ideology in the 1930s as a possible alternative to segregation in America. He dabbled with the movement for the next 20 years until, in 1953, he was deposed by McCarthy. During the investigation, Hughes was quoted as saying: ‘I never read the theoretical books of socialism or communism or the Democratic or Republican parties for that matter, and so my interest in whatever may be considered political has been non-theoretical, non-sectarian, and largely emotional and born out of my own need to find some way of thinking about this whole problem of myself' – making this a most interesting item indeed! Very good condition.
