Description:

LANCASTER CRASH RELIC FROM THE 'DAMBUSTERS' RAID
A terrific World War II relic, a dug section of the airframe of R.A.F. Avro Lancaster Mk.III, serial number ED937, call sign AJ-A 'Apple', which participated in the famous May 16-17, 1943 raid on key dams in the Ruhr Valley. The 9 x 8.5 in. riveted aluminum structural piece, possibly part of an aileron, bears an old paper museum tag indicating that the plane: '...was hit by flak over the Mohne Dam and crashed 6 KM away at Ostennen. During road excavations for a new autobahn in the early [90's] many pieces of wreckage were dug up and presented to the Scampton Museum by Mielie GMBH, the contractors...' The relic is clearly a dug piece, one side more corroded than the other, de-accessed by the owner of the private museum. After successfully attacking the Mohne Dam and witnessing the breaching of the Eder Dam, AJ-A was hit by flak over Germany, near Ostonnen, while attempting to return to base. All seven crew members were killed in the crash.
