Description:


(1725 - 1806) American military and political leader during the Revolution. He organized the defense of Savannah, charged with defense of Georgia's southern flank from British incursions from Florida, later fighting about Charleston. In a 1777 duel, he fatally shot Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Scarce manuscript D.S. 'Lac: McIntosh', 1p. legal folio, Liberty Co., Ga, Jan. 20, 1791. a petition from Alexander Forrester who, having lived in the state for six years, asks the court to grant him 'the rights & privileges of the Citizens of this State agreeable to the Naturalization Law of the United States...' MacIntosh signs at bottom, adding an attestation that Forrester lives in the state and has good character, and is cosigned by another member of his family, a 'N. McIntosh'. On verso the docket indicates the Forrester was granted his request the same day. A few letters at right margin blurred, else very good. Forrester, a popular man in the county, may have been a distant relative to McIntosh.
