Description:

Fine example of an L.C. Smith "Eagle Grade" double-barrel shotgun, 28 in. barrels, 46 in. overall, 12-gauge, serial number 220502E, dating it to 1936. It features a single selective trigger and a sliding safety just behind the barrel release latch. The case-hardened locks are finely engraved, with a high-relief image of a pheasant on one side and a duck on the other, with foliate decorations overall. The maker's name "L.C Bates" also appears on each lock, with the owner's initials "MDK" on the trigger guard. The serial number appears on the trigger guard tang and the flat of the hinge, and the latter also shows several Belgian proofmarks. The finely-grained walnut stock is deeply checked at the wrist, and the butt is fitted with a brown rubber Pachmeyer pad. The barrels are high-quality Belgian replacements, "Manufacture D'Armes de Chasse" on the top of the right barrel at the breech, with "Masquelier -Liege - Belgium" on the left barrel. The underside of each barrel is marked "Acier Siemens", with the serial number "220502" on the right barrel, indicating that they were made specifically to match this gun. The underside of the barrels and the barrel flats also bear extensive Belgian proofmarks. The foliate engraving continues on the breech end of the barrels and the barrel hinge. The top of the barrels is fitted with a Simmons vented rib, with ivory bead sights. The interior of the checked walnut foregrip again bears the serial number "220502 E", with a 1901 patent date. The bores are in pristine condition, while the action shows some slight grease buildup, with some very light handling marks to the stock. NRA grade excellent or higher. Sold with a vintage padded case.
