Description:

KURT DALUEGE
(1897 - 1946) Chief of Security Police in SD central office, appointed SS-Oberstgruppenfuehrer (1942), succeeded Heydrich as Deputy Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. Hanged by the Czechs in 1946. Fine association typed D.S. 2pp. 4to., Berlin, Aug. 23, 1941 onn his blind-embossed letterhead to ERHARD MILCH (1892-1972), co-creator with Goering of the Luftwaffe, promoted to the rank of field marshal, later tried at Nuremberg and imprisoned until 1954. Daluege offers a lengthy report to Milch regarding the unsatisfactory role of the police in supporting the air defense system, and asks for help in smoothing over the criticism: ‘...The local air defense commanders have proved unequal to their tasks…I [was] not aware that the effectiveness of the security and rescue services has fallen away. I have only very recently had further letters of appreciation from the air defense zone commanders in the areas which have suffered the heaviest attacks. You will understand, my dear Milch, how this letter has affected me and my whole force. I must ask you to set on foot an inquiry…in which it will be substantiated that we - with the resources which were actually at our disposal - have done everything possible to make the air defense into an organization which today is public…and still insufficiently recognized. Since it is possible for the police in the face of enormous new responsibilities in the territory won in the East, still to carry out to the fullest its obligations to air defense, a judgment might well have been expected of a different kind from that provided by a head of department in your ministry, [Kurt] Knipfer…make a personal decision about the matter before this letter produces a negative effect…'. With full translation. Milch has annotated and initialed the document in red indelible pencil. The subject of this letter, Kurt Knipfer (1892-1969), was ministerial director of the Reich's aviation ministry and in high command in the Luftwaffe. He played a key role in setting up civil air defense and served as Goering's air defense commissioner.
