138. KU KLUX KLAN An extraordinary, rare relic of the first incarnation of the Ku Klux Klan, an A.L.S. "K.K.K.", 1p. 4to. in pencil, Hawkinsville, Ga., Sept. 7, 1868 threatening a black man by the name of Robert Anderson. The anonymous correspondent writes in most part: "...I have heard that you are a very good wite [sic] washer. Therefore I would like to give you to wite wash my Out House and also clean it. I think that you are the best man I can find to do my work, in case you don't do my work, you will have to leave this place in 24 hours. You have stayed in this place long enough with out work. go and wite like you have done in Macon or go to Hell." Beneath the "K.K.K." signature the author has rendered a crude drawing of a man with his arms outstretched and what appears to be a penis between his legs over the caption: "go to Hell". Light toning and soiling, otherwise very good. $1,000-1,500
