Description:

KU KLUX KLAN BROCHURES AND PAMPHLETS
Good group of eight articles of ephemera, consisting of brochures and pamphlets distributed by the Ku Klux Klan, most circa 1920''s but one more recent. Includes: "Official Monthly Bulletin Issued by the Department of the Imperial Klaliff", 4pp. 4to. , Atlanta, Nov. 1, 1926, a printed circular offering news from various state Klan chapters (or "realms") throughout the U.S. The announcements primarily describe successful Klan gatherings and events, although the presentation of a flag pole to the College of William and Mary in Virginia by Imperial Wizard Hiram W. Evans is also mentioned. The back page bears an odd, unattributed epitaph entitled "A Successful Life". Shows folds and slight toning, else very good. WITH: Printed brochure, "Principles and Purposes of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Are Outlined by An Exalted Cyclops of the Order", 10pp. 8vo., setting forth the tenets of the Klan, including its opposition to Catholicism, immigration, and lawlessness, and its Protestant underpinnings. Shows some insect damage to two pages, minor toning and folds, else very good. WITH: Printed brochure, "The Ku Klux Klan: Yesterday Today and Forever", by William Joseph Simmons, 12pp. 8vo., a propagandistic retelling of Simmons'' re-establishment of the modern Klan in 1915, along with its core tenets and goals. The front cover bears an illustration of a robed Klansman astride a similarly robed horse, clutching a burning torch. Shows folds, else very good. WITH: A double-sided Knights of the Ku Klux Klan "Klode Card", 12mo., presenting the "Klodes", or anthems, sung at the opening and closing of Klan meetings. Very good. WITH: Printed card, 2 1/2" x 4 1/2", listing the "Fundamental Tenets of the KKK". The card notes that "Membership [is] Limited to White Protestants", and lists such guiding values as "White Supremacy", "Separation of Church and State", "Preservation of Public Schools", and "America and American Ideals for Americans". Very good. WITH: Two items attacking 1928 Democratic presidential candidate Al Smith, one a 3 1/2" x 4" card bearing a printed anti-Smith poem, in part: "...When Catholics rule the United States/And the Jews grow a straight nose; When Pope Pius is Head of the Ku Klux Klan/In the land of Uncle Sam - Then Al Smith will be our President - And this country not worth a DAMN!!". The second piece is a miniature printed brochure, 4pp. 12mo., released by the Realm of Pennsylvania and loftily entitled "The Ku Klux Klan Discloses its Position on the Presidency". Opening the brochure reveals an illustration of the White House with a "Ku Klux Klan" sign on the front gate, captioned "Closed! to the Roman Catholic candidate, Mr. Al Smith of New York because of his divided Allegiance!" The back page bears the edict: "The Ku Klux Klan insists That Every Presidential Candidate - Like Caesar''s Wife - Must be Above Suspicion". Both are very good. WITH: A more modern mimeographed three-fold brochure, likely circa 1970''s, released by the Alabama Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, entitled "An Introduction to the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan", presenting a propagandistic view of the origin of the Klan, its symbols , its philosophy and its utility, and soliciting members and monetary contributions. Very good. Eight pieces.
