Description:

Kriegsmarine soldier's photo album, 50pp. oblong 8vo., containing approx. 230 b/w photos depicting his service in World War II and his civilian life. The album opens with two 3 1/4" x 5 1/4" real-photo postcard portraits of the soldier, his insignia indicating that he is a member of the coastal artillery. On the facing page, in a space intended to hold a portrait of Hitler, appears an image of a KONIGSBERG-class cruiser firing a broadside. The remaining balance of the photos mostly consists of candid snapshots showing this artilleryman's relatively peaceful life during wartime, with many images of him on parade with his regiment, on sentry duty, at ease in the barracks, on leave with family, performing various physical tasks and posing in several variations of his Kriegsmarine uniform. He also depicts several views of the landscape in which he is stationed, including cranes and docks in a port, windmills, barrage balloons, and several towns. Interestingly, when shown on parade or sentry duty, the artilleryman and his regiment are armed with Dutch M95 rifles. This and some clues from the landscape suggest that he was stationed in an occupied Dutch port. The final fifty or so photos consist of family photos, the majority presumably showing his wife and daughter. The album closes incongruously with a photo signed by an unidentified German racing driver. Additional out-of-place images include a postcard photo of an SS soldier with a young girl, and a real-photo postcard bearing an official portrait of Grand Admiral Erich Raeder. The swastika-bedecked "Reichskriegsflagge" on the green faux-leather cover has been obliterated with a blue ballpoint pen, while the title "Meine Kriegserinnerungen" ("My War Memories") appears at bottom right. Shows notable wear to the covers, with one photo apparently removed, else very good.
