Description:

KOREAN WAR PHOTO ARCHIVE
Extensive archive of approx. 120 b/w snapshots, each 5" x 3 1/2" and smaller, accumulated by Pennsylvania National Guard howitzer gunner Robert S. Wolverton and vividly illustrating his unit''s experiences during the Korean War. The group includes five images of North Korean and Chinese casualties, including a particularly gruesome shot of a charred corpse peering out of a foxhole and a trench packed with dead soldiers. Other notable images include American troops guarding a column of naked prisoners of war, soldiers searching a Korean civilian, POW''s behind barbed wire at an Eighth Army prison camp, and prisoners repairing a road under American guard. Several combat shots show American riflemen taking cover behind sandbags and terrain, machine gunners and a bazooka operator firing into a valley, and artillery emplacements providing fire support. Wounded American and allied Korean personnel are also shown in two images, and civilian refugees and their ruined communities are also well-represented. Military hardware depicted includes the M7 howitzer motor carriage, the M4A3 Sherman tank, and most interestingly, the Sikorsky H-5 and H-19 Chickasaw helicopters, both marked "U.S. Air Force Rescue". Further images show Republic of Korea artillery units and a military band, a baseball game between Wolverton''s unit, the 176th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, and the 999th Field Artillery Battalion, at that point an all-black unit which was gradually integrated during the course of the war, and other views of Wolverton. Some images bear Wolverton''s ink descriptions on the verso; we believe that the collection includes shot taken both by Wolverton and other members of unit. Copies of several of these images were also donated to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in 2002, and are visible in their online archives, although the photographer is not identified. All are very good. Accompanying this archive of photos are a number of other items related to Wolverton''s long military service, including additional photographs depicting him as a U.S. Navy sailor during World War II and during maneuvers with his howitzer unit post-Korea, nine pieces of cloth insignia, including four name tags and four unit patches for the U.S. Army''s "I" and "X" Corps, three Pennsylvania National Guard discharge certificates for his father, Robert B. Wolverton, and a label from a Republic of Korea Army ration pack, and more.
