KNOW-NOTHING AND SEXUALLY-EXPLICIT LETTERS (2)
An excellent pair of letters written from New York with content relating to the Know-Nothing Party and various sexual references, 6pp. total, 8vo., New York, Jan. 15 and Feb 7, 1855, in part: ‘…Well I suppose you and the old shit are comfortably located in Collins building, don't get drunk more than once a week & only fuck everything that passes by or in hailing distance. If you ever get short you must run down to my old flame Kitty and give her a crack for old acquaintance sake, and charge all damages to me. Joe pride says he will give you all his interest in Ellen so if you will be economical and prudent you need never want for the great luxury of life…having become initiated into the secrets and mysteries of the ‘Know Nothings' tis a great society and I like it very much, they work in the dark but where there [sic] blows fall, they do so with effect…The election of US Senator for this state took place yesterday & that arch agitator, scoundrel and abolitionist W[illiam] H. Seward was elected by a majority of 111 votes he received 12 Know Nothing votes. This I have no doubt will seriously injure the KN party in Va & throughout the whole South. Still it could not be helped for every Know Nothing elected to the Legislature had sworn to vote against Seward, yet we find that 13 of them willfully perjured themselves and proved traitors to the cause they espoused. A day of retribution however will soon arrive…'. Very good. The Native American Party, commonly called the 'Know Nothing' movement, was an American political party during the mid-1850s. It promised to purify American politics by limiting or ending the influence of Irish Catholics, Germans, and other immigrants. In the New York Senate election of 1855, Seward was nominated, while there were two Know-Nothing candidates, Daniel Ullmann and William Campbell, who received one vote each.
