KNIGHTS OF THE KU KLUX KLAN LETTERS AND DOCUMENTS (4)
An interesting group of four original pieces on Knights of the Ku Klux Klan letterhead, includes: typed letter, 1p. 4to., Washington, D.C., March 26, 1930, on ‘Imperial Palace, Invisible Empire Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Incorporated' letterhead, from Fred V. Larkin, ‘Imperial Representative, Realm of Maryland', to a recipient in Perry Point. Larkin demands that his correspondent have his Klan adopt an enclosed resolution (missing here), and send copies to his representatives and senators, in part: ‘...Something must be done, and that soon, to get action on this bill. It is now stuck in the same place where all previous bills of this nature have died, that is, in committee… The time has come when we can no longer recognize as final, nor even countenance, the desires and demands of the Roman Catholic Church in America regarding the public school system, and more especially so, since the pope's encyclical on education… We of the Klan are demanding that the desires of millions of patriotic Americans be given consideration and that the representatives from the various States give such consideration…' Larkin signs at the conclusion in green ink. WITH: Typed document, 2pp. 4to., ‘Cecil Klan #4, Perryville, Md.', [n.d.], on ‘Klan Number 23, Elkton, Maryland' letterhead, a ‘List of all Public Schools and Teachers in the 5th & 7th Districts of Cecil County' Maryland. Most interestingly, the name of a teacher at North East High School bears the notation ‘This man has his application in Elk Klan #23'. In addition, the verso lists all five ‘Colored Elementary Teachers' in the relevant districts. WITH: printed document, 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], announcing the ‘Fifth Imperial Klonvokation', or national meeting, of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, to be held in Chicago on Aug. 18-19, 1930. The announcement bears the printed signature of Imperial Wizard Hiram W. Evans at the conclusion, and is countersigned with the printed signature of ‘Imperial Kligrapp', Nathaniel Bedford Forrest II. WITH: printed document, 1p. 4to., Pittsburgh, Sep. 10, 1924, on ‘Imperial Palace, Invisible Empire Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Incorporated' letterhead, a circular from the ‘King Kleagle' of Pennsylvania, announcing a ‘Klonvacation' at Kansas City on Sep. 23-25, and ordering that public parades be discontinued due to ongoing legal proceedings. The message closes with the instruction: ‘...Help the Juniors in your locality as they will be the future Klansmen of the Nation. It is a great movement to train the young men in high ideals and standards of living. It means much to the boy…' Bears a stamped signature at the conclusion. All four pieces are mildly toned and show original mailing folds, with minor splits thereto, else very good.
