Description:

'KLEINE HITLER-ALBUM' ANTI-HITLER WOODBLOCK PRINT VOLUME
'Kleines Hitler-Album' ('Small Hitler Album'), created by Hans Gerner (Stuttgart: Verlag der Sonntags-Zeitung), 1932. Approx. 80pp. 8vo in paper boards, illustrated cover. A collection of 22 woodcuts from the 'Sonntags-Zeitung' newspaper, many quite satirically executed and captioned, and no doubt found quite insulting by the soon-to-be fuhrer, Hitler. They show him alternately as a baby, hobnobbing with industrialists and the clergy, in a 'blowhard' competition with Hindenburg, etc. Very good, in slipcase. Hans Gerner (1893-1946) was a well known German caricaturist and a teacher. In April 1933 he was imprisoned in the Heuberg concentration camp. After his release he was transferred to Nurtingen and later to Aalen as a punishment. In order to be able to remain in school, he joined the NSDAP in the early 1940s and in 1943 he was drafted as a reserve officer.
