218. KLANSMEN SHOOT DROWNING BLACK VOTERS Fine content A.D.S. 1p. legal folio, Richmond Co., Ga., Nov. 5, 1868, a deposition signed with his "mark" by one of the victims, black citizen Humphry Curtis. In the deposition, Curtis notes that at midnight on Oct. 30, 1868 six men broke into his house, bringing his father with them, and identifies four of the men by name. He states that all of the men were armed with revolvers and demanded more arms, tearing-up the house as they searched for weapons. The men then went to Tucker's Mill, likewise ransacked Curtis' father's house, then took father, son and a third man to the mill pond. He continues: "...[They] tied William Curtis' feet together, also the feet of Abram Brigsly, and threw both into the Millpond...carried all of us up the Mill dam. Abram Brigsly turned off the dam below the pond...all six of the above named men shot at him, killed him instantly and he sunk in the stream, next they made William Curtis get down into the water...then Henry Freeman shot him in the head...after he was fallen over all of them shot him, he then sunk. Deponent was then standing in the water by the side of his father...[he] was shot...struck in the breast, next in the shoulder, next in the side, each shot took effect, two balls are now in deponent, one ball has been taken out by the surgeon. Deponent dived in the water and succeeded in getting away...". Within in pencil is an additional pencil notation initialed "B", likely by Georgia Gov. RUFUS BULLOCK who routinely commented on such cases. It reads: "The sufferers in this case are colored. The perpetrators are well known 'Ku Klux'. The Republican representative from that county elected in April dares not go back to his county - Having been repeatedly set upon & threatened. B.".
