Description:

"KLAN DAY" BROADSIDE
Rare printed broadside, 11 1/2" x 17 1/2" on light pink paper, advertising a "Klan Day" in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, circa 1924. The date of the event is given as Saturday, Sep. 20, "From 12 Noon Until Midnight", with attractions including: "Klavalier Drills - Athletic Events - Klan Wedding - Music - Daylight Fireworks - National Speakers", as well as a "Big Street Parade of Robed Men in Lebanon" and a "Big Naturalization [induction into the Klan] for Men and Women". At bottom appears the rather ironic exclamation: "Everybody Welcome!" The broadside shows original folds with some slight toning, else very good. Interestingly, it would seem that this gathering never took place as scheduled, as present with the broadside is a set of correspondence between the Lebanon chapter of the Klan, the organizers of this event, and the Altoona Klan, beginning with an unsigned typed letter from "Kleagle" (organizer) T.J. Rahn, 1p. 4to., Lebanon, Aug. 18, 1924, inviting Altoona ""Kleagle" John F. Marshall, inviting him to send a delegation of "Klavaliers" to participate in the event advertised above. In part: "...Surely at a time like this when our cause is so dangerously at stake it needs the earnest co-operation of every real He-man, to lay his all on the altar of Service and promote the blessings of Klan-Kraft, to ourselves and our posterity. There will be daylight fireworks, a Klan wedding and we are depending on other Klans to furnish us with bands. Won't you and your men come and bring you Klavaliers and band? At 6 P.M. we are going to parade and at 8 o'clock York Klan of York, Pa. will put on the work for us. There will be a national speaker with us and the last but not least a grand display of fireworks and a number of surprises which will please you if you Kome..." Marshall's response is recorded in a retained copy of an unsigned typed letter, 1p. 4to., Altoona, Aug. 29, 1924, in which Marshall promises to bring the proposition up to his organization. The final article of correspondence from Rahn, an A.L.S., 1p. 4to. Lebanon, Sep. 8, 1924, to Marshall, takes a decidedly disappointed tone. In part: "I was more than sorry to receive you last letter, this puts us in Bad, we were very much disappointed when we received word to Cancel the 13th it was not our doings the State office told us to. I regret more than I can tell you that you can't be with us. I am particularly interested in having you here for Drills & our Parade, I have 8 Bro in Law's in your Organization and I though they sure would be here to help us out, you know this is our first attempt, you People are so strong up there and could afford to put one of your meetings off, that is I mean, your People get to see Demonstrations often up there..." These letters show paper clip marks, some toning and chips at the edges, else very good.
