Description:

(KING PHILIP'S WAR - BATTLE OF BLOODY BROOK) JOHN STEBBINS AND BENONI STEBBINS
Very rare manuscript D.S., 1p. 8.25 x 12.25 in., [Deerfield, Ma.], Dec. 20, 1690, an indenture for the transfer of a 'house lot' in Deerfield by JOHN STEBBINS (1644-1733), his wife Doxithy[?], and his brother BENONI STEBBINS (1655-1704) to one Joseph Gillet in exchange for other land in Deerfield. Both John and Benoni Stebbins have signed at bottom, John's first name slightly smeared. A few letters of text lost at right margin, else boldly penned and very good, simply framed in an older black wood frame with gold trim, the document itself is surface mounted to an off-white matte, inset with two typed cards showing biographical information for each of the brothers. JOHN STEBBINS (1647-1724) served with Capt. Lathrop during King Philip's War and survived the massacre at Bloody Brook, the only Deerfield survivor. He was one of the permanent settlers of Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1682. His house was burned in the attack of Feb. 29, 1704 during Queen Anne's War and his entire family was taken to Canada; only he, his wife, and one son John, were redeemed. BENONI STEBBINS (1655-1704), John's brother, attempted to settle at Deerfield in 1677 but was captured during the Ashpelon raid of that year. He returned in 1682 and built on his father's lot the house that would be so bravely defended by seven men and a few women during the Deerfield Raid of 1704, when Benoni alone would be killed in its defense. The grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren continued to occupy property near this site until the early 20th century.
