(KING GEORGE'S WAR)
Broadside, 1p. folio, Boston, March 21, 1746 (Printed by John Draper), a "PROCLAMATION for a general FAST" by Massachusetts Governor William Shirley. In recognition of the major French attacks in northern New York in the fall of 1745 which forced settlers north of Albany to abandon their homes, the Governor declared: "Whereas it has pleased Almighty GOD to manifest His righteous Anger, in the Continuance of the expensive and destructive War, in which the Nations of Europe are involved (notwithstanding the Overtures which have been made for brining the same to a happy Conclusion) and, in his sovereign and holy Providence, to distinguish this Province by rendering the Burthens and Calamities of War remarkably grievous and distressing to it, in the Number of People that have been slain and captivated by the Enemy, and have perished by Sickness and other Disasters, and by taking off so many of our People form the Business of the Husbandry whereby… the Necessaries of Life re become scarce and dear… " Extremely rare (OCLC 78151648). Worldcat identifies only one extant institutional copy of this broadside. Separated folds reinforced with tissue on verso, light dampstains, some losses affecting text at fold intersections, some marginal chips and tears, else very good condition overall.
