Description:

KING GEORGE'S WAR PRIVATEER LETTER
A rare King George's War era letter, 1p. 4to. Boston, Feb. 20, 1746, by Boston merchant and financier, Stephen Greenleaf to Newport, Rhode Island merchant, William White concerning a court decision to divide prize money of a French vessel seized by the privateer Duke of Marlborough. In part: "…I have yours at post covering Capt. [Robert] Morris [commander of the Duke of Malborough]…two ships sailed for So. Carolina last week…best not to return the letter till [I] receive your orders…if possible shall send it forward to Carolina. Please to inform Mr. Vernon [Admiral?] or any others concerned ye Duke of Malborough [a privateer chartered by the Colony of Rhode Island]…that I have done little or nothing for ten days but attend upon ye Courts and the sale & delivery of ye prize goods; this day we finished the arguments on the last claims for salvage & now wait for the Judge's decree & tomorrow hope to finish ye sale of ye goods, you will please to assure them that I shall push the affair to a close…as the repeated delays gives me ten times the uneasiness that it can them…". Interestingly, Greenleaf was connected with the Boston Massacre trial. Usual toning, a few fold splits, else very good.
